Amara condemns the harassment, threats, and attacks Somali individuals in our community and across the country are experiencing as a direct result of online propaganda and hate speech, much of it stemming from the current federal administration. Hate, and the harm it fuels, has no place here in the Puget Sound region or anywhere in our country.
Silence serves the oppressor, so we will not be silent. Amara sees and values our beloved Somali community. We vigorously defend and honor the humanity of our Somali community and everyone who this administration harms. Amara affirms their right to exist without being a target of State violence.
The challenge we all must accept is to not stay silent while our Black and Brown community members face escalated vitriol and discrimination. Share warm words of compassion and support with any of your neighbors and friends who are scared and unsafe due to this administration’s violent actions. Write letters to the editor of your local media, report threats and harassment to local authorities, and do not allow hateful statements made in your circles to go unchecked.
We reaffirm our shared humanity by uniting in support of those who are oppressed.
